You’ll need a larger vocabulary anyway, to go with your fabulous new grammar skills. Plus, now you’ll be able to talk tech at your next family function, and truly earn yourself the title of “My Cousin the Computer Geek”. This week’s term: Permalink Permalink means Permanent Link. I seriously hope you already knew that. Permalinks are assigned to posts to avoid broken links after the post has been archived within its site. If you’re a good little blogger, you’ll link to other blog posts fairly frequently. Well, wouldn’t it be annoying if you linked, and once the post got archived the link became invalid? That’s what we call a broken link, and those are very, very bad. Permalinks are also quite useful in terms of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), because the keywords will be right in the page’s address. That means Google will give you more props. Check out Problogger for more tips on using permalinks for SEO.
Additionally, the post should have a URL that makes sense. The URL should have your site name and the article name. For example: This is visually appealing, as well as informative. It tells you the owner of the post and the post’s title.
If your URL doesn’t make sense, someone could permalink to it and later forget what it is. For instance: www.rsspieces.com/tv4eusa97m/p=57 That doesn’t make any sense! It also doesn’t work, so don’t bother trying to click on it. You already did, didn’t you? Come on, do you really think RSS Pieces is going to use nonsensical links on our own site?

Excellent series idea. I think I will be a regular reader. Welcome aboard, Steven. We're happy to have you, and I'm glad you're enjoying my new series! Comment from: Joanne Hanson [Visitor] Track backs confuse me. I think my wordpress blog makes them automatically but I have no clue how they work! That is my vote...
Comment from: Sapan Behar [Visitor] · http://www.bcblueberryfarm.com I never really understood exactly what they were for. Wouldn't it be the same if someone grabs the address from the address bar? Or is it that by clicking the link, a user can automatically link to that particular post? Comment from: Ines [Member] Don't keep feeding me terms.....my husband already thinks I'm a geek! Sapan - I am not sure what you mean exactly. Yes, you can get the link from the address bar, and yes, you can also click the link to automatically direct to the post. I hope that answers your question! Ines - You are NOT a geek! You're just exceptionally intelligent :) Comment from: San Diego Real Estate [Visitor] Good information about permalinks, I wish that more agents would spend time learning more about how to run a more effective real estate business online. Information like this will only help them get a little bit closer. Comment from: DHUROWITZ [Visitor] Well done, your site does a very good job in taking some rather tech.terms and making them easy to understand.
