Social Bookmarking to be or not to be

What is Social Bookmarking?

Social bookmarking is a way for internet users to submit their favorite websites/posts to a public web site.  Users may also save another users bookmark to their own personal collection, and subscribe to a list of multiple other categories and public bookmarks.  To begin, you would need to register with one or choose two or three social bookmarking sites.  Here are the top 5 recommended sites:

  • ·         Digg

After you choose your site(s) you can begin to store bookmarks, tag the articles with your own keywords, choose whether or not you would like for the site to be public or private, and much more.  For an example, at the bottom of each post on our blog we have the icons for these 5 social bookmarking sites.  I continue to see bloggers just adding features, to add them, without knowing exactly what they do, if they will help their SEO value, or if they are completely useless.

Does Social Bookmarking have any REAL Advantages?

Isn’t this the question you always ask someone when they are telling you to do something that sounds pretty silly?  Well I do, even at work, we are all like the curious three year old playing in the mud and Mom says to stop, the question is always why?  Well it’s ok to ask why.  This is your blog and you want to make sure that before you spend your precious time on doing something a little extra to promote your blog is going to benefit you somehow.  Since I love lists so much, here are your advantages:

  • ·         Gives your readers a chance to become more involved in your site.  Allowing them to easily bookmark your site, promote it on social bookmarking websites, which in turn brings you more traffic to your site.  With this is mind, DO NOT draw up your own conclusion right now and think that you are going to see a dramatic increase in your unique visitors.  These things take time.
  • ·         Social Bookmarking creates one way links to your blog and helps your posts to be ranked on search engines much better.
  • ·         It allows you to find other people with the niche that you share.

So what are YOU waiting for?  Get started today and see how quick and easy it is.

I have ben playing with the sites already, but don't really know what I am doing and how they can help my SEO.  This is a good article to start my research so that I know what to do to use them to my advantage.  Thanks!

This is helpful. I look at all those sites - Digg and Tecnorati and the whole lot of them - and think "have I got time for this?"

I've already got a half dozen websites and a half dozen blogs. I comment on Realty Times. I'm on myspace (well, minimally), Facebook, Active Rain, Real Town, and I try to visit my friends' and other blogs.  I signed up for Twitter and then realized I just don't have time. I don't remember how to un-signup for it but need to say "sorry, can't do it" there.

How much more time do I need to spend on this social networking stuff????

I'm going to take your word for it that this is a good idea and give it a shot. Maybe on one or two of them. Hopefully they don't need a lot of ongoing TLC to work :-)

Maybe I just need fewer blogs and fewer websites since I suspect I'm online too much as it is, but now ought to think about factoring in one more element - but somehow, somewhere, something's gotta give!
