The first Thanksgiving took place in New England and was celebrated by the Pilgrim settlers who established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1620. The Pilgrims had struggled for so long on this voyage with little food and much sickness taking over. In the spring, the Indians had helped the Pilgrims plant corn, and in the autumn, the first crop was harvested. Governor William Bradford demanded that three days were dedicated solely to prayer and thanks. The Pilgrims planned a huge feast and invited many of the Indians to join them. This was the beginning of Thanksgiving that spread like a wildfire throughout other colonies over the years. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day to be held on the last Thursday in November each year. The present date was established by Congress in 1941.
