28 comments » TRAFFIC DRIVING blog titlesNo matter how good your content is, if you dont get people to read it, all that information that you are providing is lost to your audience.People love glitz, glamour, gossip... why else do you think CNN.com has started putting gossipy headlines about Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson or some other pop-tartlet of the day on their homepage? Im sure that one of todays featured stories "Harrison Ford: Im still fit to play Indiana Jones" isnt really news, but Ill probably read it. Why? Its a sensational headline. The kind of headline that if you wrote it, would get you the front page of a syndication site like Digg and get bookmarked in Del.icio.us. Read also: Formula for a Successful Blog Post Where I am going with this one is, before you even think about writing some Pulitzer Prize winning content, come up with an attention grabbing title. Im not talking about some fun play on words that makes people think too hard about what you have to say, I am talking about a to the point, call to action headline that just begs a reader to click on it and read the article. I call these "Houston Headlines." For those of you that dont or have never lived in Houston, TX: a "Houston Headline" is a headline that makes you read or watch a news piece because you think if you dont your children might get run over by a runaway train or roaming vagabonds might break into your home and kidnap you Patti Hurst style.
So, what kinds of titles create headlines for real estate sites? These are just examples of the types of titles you can use. I am not suggesting these titles, just showing you how to implement the ideas. The Fear Factor:
Create a little fear. Make people feel like if they dont read this their entire buying, selling, investing future is in jeopardy. Sounds crazy but the fear of loss is a compelling reason to dig deeper into some topic.
The List:
People love lists. Think about People Magazines Most Beautiful People issue. It is historically one of their best selling issues each year. Simple lists catch peoples attention. It gives them knowledge in bite sized pieces.
The Call to Action:
Strangely, people like to be told what to do. They like to be guided through processes. So, writing "How-to" and "Ultimate Guide" type titles always make for a popular post. FYI: These types of titles and posts are called "tutorial marketing."
The Myth
There wouldnt be a show called Mythbusters if people didnt like their myths busted. So, bust those myths.
The Secret
As Realtors, I know you know things that average home buyers like myself are just in the dark about... Share them. People like to think they are getting "exclusive" or "secret" information. Doesnt a secret peak your interest?
The Gossip
Please, we all cant get enough of Star Magazine in the grocery line. I may not buy it, but I read every juicy little nugget I can while the husband unpacks the cart! Its an unfortunate fact, people love sensational gossipy news. If your area is predisposed to having celebrities in town or you have a local scandal, blog all about it. It will drive traffic in droves to your site and possibly get you syndicated!

Comment from: Roberta Murphy [Visitor] Mary: After seeing your response to my Active Rain post, I had to hop over here for exploration. I saw that catchy headline about writing catchy headlines, and had to click in. Nice article and worthy of a bookmark. When I remember to do it, I try to make the headline SE-friendly. It is a delicate balance. You do it well! Comment from: jf.sellsius [Visitor] An excellent instructive post on the value of a great headline to get anything read by the fast-paced, often jaded, web surfer. (of course you have to deliver on the promise of the headline). Copywriting skills are a little utilized but essential part of any communication on the web. Your headline can even determine your diggs, as a study I came across showed. Another keeper. Thanks Mary. Comment from: Andrey Polston [Visitor] It's good to find posts that don't just talk about an industry in general...but actually provide information that myself and my clients, who read my blog, can implement into their own strategies. I've blogged a review of this as well. Comment from: Laura Monroe [Visitor] HI Mary, I hopped over as well from ActiveRain, and am going to have get serious about reading through everything I have bookmarked from you! As a VA I have an interest not only for my business, but clients as well! Comment from: Cyndi Sloop [Visitor] So why would Rod Stewart make a bad neighbor? I've idolized him for over 30 years now. What's the scoop? Great information and ideas to "get attention" with headlines. You always produce a great post! Thanks you. Comment from: Sam [Visitor] I love your blog titles and I use some of them myself. This is great information that agents with blogs need to know. Comment from: Sam Chapman [Visitor] Such an incredible amount of incredibly useful information. I don't know where you get it! You're right on about post titles. I posted on AR uwing the title "It Pays To Jump People." It was about helping jump start a lady's car. She owned a chocolate shop and gave me a wonderful gift certificate. Lots of people read it and I got some fun comments. Comment from: Laura [Visitor] Great post. Provides good information on establishing solid headlines that will get the readers attention. Comment from: Tom [Visitor] · http://www.theory-test.co.uk Nice to read this. People realy likes this kind of headings. Comment from: Austin Real Estate Team [Visitor] · http://www.escapesomewhere.com Interesting post. I will have to bookmark this for the next time I have to come up with some blog titles. Comment from: mellie scott [Visitor] Some interesting comments, makes good reading. Comment from: bobmutch [Visitor] Fear factor, lists, myths, and secrets are 4 good ways to write titles to get click thought. Also important is to get the post to rank so people will click though. One good way to do this is to target a key phrase that you site has enough authority to rank for. As most blogs don't have as much ranking authority as RSS Pieces and most of posts won't get inbound link action like the more popular site on-page optimization is very important. The title tag is one of the most important on-page items to optimize. I did up a WordPress plugin that helps with this. It provides a subtitle field right below the title field on the write post page and then adds the subtitle inline with the site so you can have the best for both worlds -- targetted key phrase in the title and decription titles (combo of the title and subtitle). Comment from: Michael Paul [Visitor] Great advice! I think that a great headline can be a great inspiration for a blog post as well. I know that sometimes I have trouble coming up with a post, but using these "templates" can be a way to get the creative juices flowing. I'll be using them quite a bit in the future. Comment from: Luke Petterson [Visitor] Yes, great read! I always struggle with writing headlines but now I'm definetely feeling a little more confident in my abilities after reading these approaches. I like how you stress that you should make the reader feel that they can't do without your info. When I think about it that is much of the reason that click on links and headlines when I'm out browsing for knowledge on the web. Comment from: qupedo [Visitor] Great man..a very fine article to spend time with. Good guide to divert traffic and make people involve in the on going process (i am sorry if its ounds technical). keep it up. Comment from: Roselind Hejl [Visitor] Thanks for the post! Headlines are important, but I try not to stress over them too much. I've been a fan of Copyblogger for some time. He got me going on improving headlines. Just reading this stuff is an inspiration. Comment from: Herb Hamilton [Visitor] I just love a good headline. In fact Headlines are what usually are the inspiration for my posts. Thanks again Mary. I like the "Myth" one, it really seems like that would catch someone's eye the most and have them wanting to read it since the "secrets" one is the most popular one (in my opinion). Comment from: Subhash [Visitor] Great Post. I have bookmarked this post. Thanks dear.
