How important is a keyword rich title tag? According to a panel of SEO experts assembled by SEOmoz a keyword rich title tag is the most important factor in search ranking factors. The panel agreed that keyword use in the title tag is of expectional importance. Her rapid ascension happened within weeks of her loading her title tag with keywords. What kind of things do you want your title tag to have in it and what should you avoid? Your title tag should have your farm area(s) and a term related to real estate like “home,” condo,” or “real estate.” You should avoid your name, your company name, some cutesy blog title and even your domain name (unless it too is keyword rich). Why? Simple, you only have so much space available and you need to load whatever space you have with those keywords… don’t waste a single character on a word you don’t need. Comment from: Mary.McKnight [Member] Oh, I think you have quite a bit to do with your own success! Between selecting a quality keyword rich domain name and taking some advice on how to load your title tag with keywords along with the auto keyword selector feature of your blog, your site skyrocketed in the SERPs, hit a PR 3 in the first update and is steadily growing backlinks. Props to you and your blog, Laurie! Comment from: TFW Crew [Visitor] This is an excellent blog, keep up the great work! I will be visiting often. :) Comment from: Geoffrey Graham [Visitor] Thanks a lot. Just when I feel like we have done everything we can, I learn something new: "Avoid using our company name in the title tag." Makes complete sense. Thanks for the great tips. Comment from: Ines [Visitor] I think I've been hearing this "key word rich" title thing from Paul Chaney so much that I dream with it! Comment from: Kermit Johnson [Visitor] I have tried added keyword rich title tags and it has yielded nearly instant improvemnt in ranking. However, if your company has strong name recognition in your market, you might want to include it in a tag occasionally. Visitors have stumbled on my site at times by searching "Independent Brokers Realty" where it was included in a title tag. If we are loading up title tags with keywords, could we run into toher problems? I am aware that search engines do not like title tags that are identical. But just how identical do title tags have to be to be considered "identical?" Does this just include tags that are exactly identical, or do we have to worry about tags sharing common, similar keywords or combinations of keywords. In my market, common keywords like "minneapolis, minnesota, real estate, homes, for sale, market, townhomes" etc will appear in various commutations or permutations on tags more than once on the site. How much similarity, e.g. 50%, 70%, etc....would look identical to Google? For example, would somewhat similar pages like the following raise the ire of Google? Common sense would tell you to maybe do a change-up here and there, but how much variation is needed? Please advise. Thank you. Comment from: Mary.McKnight [Member] Length of a title tag: Keep your title tag to under 60 characters. Google and other search engines do not read more than the first 60 characters, so make every word count. Comment from: Steve Didier [Visitor] This post (and the one on ActiveRain where I found the link to this one) is great for those of us who are in the process of learning the finer points of SEO. Good stuff - I'll be back to check things out often! Comment from: Steve Bartlett [Visitor] Thanks for the great article. Since my business is located in several areas, I had to shorten my title tag to 60 characters. Does that number also include the spaces?
