A Year's Worth of Real Estate Blog Ideas, I

Think you can’t come up with new real estate blog content everyday? Well, just in case your blogging brain ever goes blank, here is a year’s worth of content ideasn in just over one month. That’s right, folks, 364 ¼ topics for real estate bloggers to plunder with plenty of great examples from Realtors that have already had success with the ideas. For the sake of space, I will break this post up into digestible chunks of about 10 ideas at a time.

ideas.jpg1. Cover a celebrity or high dollar home sale in your area.

Some areas are luckier than other with plenty of million dollar home sales and celebrities moving in and out of town. If you happen to be in one of those areas, leverage the resource and cover those high dollar sales or celebrity happenings.

EXAMPLE: Check out the Real Estate Bloggers coverage of Shakira’s Miami home sale.

2. Use census data to give readers a mile high picture of the county or a neighborhood.

If your town or farm area has won any awards like “fastest growing city” or “ best city for tech companies” this is the time to mention those accolades.

EXAMPLE: See how Jay Thompson makes Maricopa County a must desirable place to live in this statistics laden post.

3. Make a list.

People love lists. Think about People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People issue.  It is historically one of their best selling issues each year. Simple lists catch people’s attention. It gives them knowledge in bite sized pieces.

IDEAS:
  • Top 10 things to do in Area X when you’re retired
  • The 20 most important things to do when staging a home for sale
  • Top 10 ways to get more for your money when buying a home

EXAMPLE:  See Christine Adler’s coverage of the 10 most expensive homes in the US for a hot list post with link bait potential.

4. New construction projects, re-development or redistricting

Talk about new construction plans in your area, downtown redevelopment or redistricting. Discuss the impact of the plans and don’t be afraid to get controversial.

EXAMPLE: Check out how Kevin Orak stirred up controversy and even landed a listing out of this post about a local Conservatory and this post about stopped construction due to slowing condo sales.

5. Housing Prices and Market conditions

Start with the simple stuff you already know or have access to through your MLS like Local housing prices and market conditions.

EXAMPLE: See how Denny Grimes is making market conditions and housing stats work for their brand new blog

6. Buyer/Seller resource guides

You can publish this as an ebook (pdf) and create a little linkbait)  Every state has different housing, taxation and mortgage regulations. By creating a very specific, step by step guide to buying and selling in your home state, you can build instant credibility and become a referenced resource.

EXAMPLE: Tony Marriott keeps buyers and sellers informed with resource guides for each neighborhood.

7. Talk about your local resources.

Everyone always wants to know about the public facilities like the town hall, library and parks. These kinds of posts give you the opportunity to talk about the history of the town, the architectural styles and other fun local facts as well as provide useful information like when the facilities are open and which events are upcoming.

EXAMPLE: See how the Minnesota Maven, Teresa Boardman spun the history of her local library in this post.

8. Podcast an interview with an industry or local big wig.

Podcasting is an easy way to create content for your blog.  Simply call up an old friend, colleague, mentor, satisfied client or adversary, ask for an interview and start recording.  It's the lazy man's way to build content that listeners just love.  make sure you keep the tone upbeat and inject some humor into the recording to keep people entertianed.

EXAMPLE: Just check out how Kris Berg over at Bloodhound recorded an interview with Redfin CEO Glen Kelman. Interesting and educational pieces where you get a taste for both Glenn and Kris’ own personalities along with their respective positions on the Redfin business model.

9. Review a restaurant

If there is one thing you can count on to spark a localized viral or word of mouth campaign for your real estate blog it is an review a local restaurant. Why? It’s simple. People love to see their name, their business or their picture in print. So, appeal to a local restaurateur’s ego and schedule and interview or say you are doing a review and would like a copy of their menu or a quote form them.

EXAMPLE: See how Lenore of the Wilkas Group walks the reader through a seafood meal at Turtle Bay Seafood and Grill

10. Connect with pet owners

If you think Fido is loyal, Fido's owner is even more loyal.  So, go target pet owners with special interest content on your blog to grow a loyal base of  readers with a common interest.  People love their pets and most people with pets are home owners or would prefer to have a home with a yard so their beloved Fluffy can run free. More pet owners are home owners than non pet owners, so make the connection by talking about furry friends. Become a resource by offering information about dog beaches, dog bakeries, dog parks, groomers, shelter, vets, pet sitters, etc.

EXAMPLE: See how Philadelphia Juicy Dish devotes a weekly column to pets to attract local niche markets

This is going to be a *great* series Mary! I'll read 'em all.

You mention restaurant reviews. I did one a year ago and it *still* draws people in from the search engines:

It's a bit of a controversial restaurant, so combining food and controversy always leads to traffic...

On a different note (though loosely food related) I wrote a blog about of all things, the end of production of Vanilla Pepsi. I've had several clients and prospects mention that they love that post because it shows personality. We actually got a buyer client solely from that post (he told us that's why he picked us).

Therein lies the beauty of blogging. Practically *anything* can be blogged about. I think injecting a little humor and personality is a powerful thing. It shows the human side of the agent / blogger.

I can't wait to see the 1/4 idea...

(and thanks for the mention)

You got that right, Jay. And I too loved the Pepsi post. The more personality you put online , the better the results. People like to see you as human and relate-able. I think the most successful blogs are the ones where the Realtor lets the public see them warts and all.

Looks like the start of a great series and I appreciate the mention. Also found Jay's Heart Attack Grill good for a chuckle!

It's the lazy man's way to build content...

Thanks a lot, Mary! :) You obviously haven't had the pleasure of competing in the mental gymnastics freestyle competition with Glenn Kelman! I loved the forum however. Writing on a blog is one thing; having to think on your feet is another. By the way, I couldn't agree more with the "warts and all" philosophy. A blog with personality will win some hearts and lose as many others, but a blog without personality will engage no one.

Topics seemed to be rehashed over and over when it comes to two topics, real estate and seo (not trying to hate Mary). And your post here, and I so look forward to the series, is to see the many ideas in which us real estate/seo bloggers may imploy for our local markets. From experinence I notice that there is not a whole lot of blogging going on in my local area, Marysville WA, and similiar can be morphed for different geographical regions...where am i going with this comment? not sure so better end now :P

Kris, I just meant the podcasting part... never would I underestimate the mental musings necessary to tangle with Glenn. You were a genius in that podcast!

Great topic. With Coldwell Banker giving all their agents a blog template, many agents are going to need things to write about. I am sure your bound to get plenty of hits now. As far ideas go, how about slanting those ideas towards working with R.E. investors? I typically give tips about working with investors on my blog and this type of slant mught help the agent develop a niche. Great, great subject.

I love the restaurant review idea.  This could be something that I could write about on a number of posts, and people would be interested in them.

Hey! you've got some superb ideas there. I haven't been able to go through all yet, It'll take a helluva lot of time; but you have sure given me some ideas to work on. Do you mind if I use some ideas? Though of course I would change them appropriately to fit my site and the idea behind it.

Thanks.
