What is a Podcast
Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their files; a podcast however is distinguished by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading RSS or Atom feeds.
Usually a podcast features one type of 'show', with new episodes released either sporadically or at planned intervals such as daily or weekly. In addition, there are podcast networks that feature multiple shows on the same feed.
Podcasting has become increasingly important for businesses. Businesses are using podcasts to provide training information to employees, customer support to clients, marketing information to potential clients and even remote presentations for conferences and annual investor meetings.
What can a Podcast do for you
Consider a podcast
• as something that can be as intensely interesting as an audiobook
• as entertaining or thought-provoking as any radio stations morning show
• and as brand-friendly as your companys latest press conference
All of these things are possible with podcasts. Most exciting, because podcasts utilize RSS technology, they will be fed to the user on your schedule, as often as you choose to update. In other words, you can time your podcast to be on your site at the same time as a new product launch. When people search for your info on your new product, your podcast will be in those results. If a user likes what he hears, he may decide to not only listen, but subscribe as well.
The Impact of Podcasting
Do not underestimate the power of podcasting in getting your message out. With the release of the video iPod in early October 2005, a new market is emerging for downloadable media.
...And this includes video casting as well!
While vidcasting is not brand new, iTunes will help it become mainstream as well. Already many online users can choose between an audio version of a podcast, or the video version when they choose to subscribe. And Yahoo and Google are on the bandwagon as well with podcast feeds in beta or recently released.
Now that iTunes is offering downloadable television shows within their podcast library, your vidcast can be right alongside traditional media your market is viewing already. You cant ask for better placement.
