THE REALTOR blog fatal flaw

Blogs are great, they drive traffic and increase your internet visibility, but some blogs do this better than others.  What makes one blog organically better than another?  Synergy between the real estate website it is attached to and the blog itself.  What creates synergy from a search engine perspective?  Simple.  Being on the same domain and submain i.e. the same server.  This is referred to as the Unified Server Theory.  Search engines will add value to your website (which is what you want) if your blog and website are "unified" on the same domain.  Find out how to create this kind synergy and what the pitfalls of not creating synergy can be in this article.

Why unify your blog and website on a common domain?

Just like life, there is synergy in websites and sites that are improperly constructed will lead to poor site traffic. The scenario I see most is that a Realtor hears that blogs are great, buys a blog, spends a year with it and still has seen no clear improvement in traffic or search engine results for their site and becomes frustrated.   This happens because there is a lack of synergy between the blog and the website- meaning they are hosted on separate servers.

Typically, this situation is caused from client X having a website at www.clientx.com and a blog at http://blog.clientx.com. Because these two sites are clearly not on the same domain (and server) the website never benefits from the increased traffic to the blog.

What happens when you don't unify your blog and website?

From the perspective of a search engine, the blog and the website are indexed as different sites so while the blog might achieve a reasonable ranking, the website never benefits.  A friend of mine used to describe this sort of add-on behavior as "Pierced ears on a pig" because even though you slapped on some nice diamond studs, at the end of the day it was still attached to a pig! To really maximize your traffic, the blog and the website should be on the same domain and sub-domain.
