Think you that dramatically changing your search engine positioning is impossible in 30 days? Take the case of Ann Cummings, www.newhampshiremainerealestate.com – I sat down with Ann and Bear (the man behind the Realtor) and went over following SEO strategies with them back in late October. As of December 1, Ann’s blog went from Nowhere’s-ville to #5 in Google for her keyword, “Portsmouth Condos.” In this post, I am going to focus entirely on things you can directly do to your blog rather than on outside factors like backlinking which can take more time to affect your search positioning. SEOmoz’s Search Engine Ranking Factors Entrepreneur’s Journal’s 8 Top Tips to Search engine Marketing 1. Keyword Use in DomainRead also: Real Estate Blog SEO Tip: Keyword Use in Domain SEOmoz experts determined that search engines hold the inclusion of keywords or terms in the registered domain name, i.e. capecoralrealestate.com as important. So, be sure to include keywords in your domain name. Search engines love keyword rich domains. Keywords specific to real estate are: your farm area, home, homes, home sales, house, condo, real estate, realty, rent, rentals, estates, etc. You can buy your name as a domain, but using it for your primary site isn’t useful from an SEO standpoint. If you want a URL with your name in it use it as a redirect to a site with more SEO pizzazz so you can leapfrog out of the Google Sandbox and the domain itself is easier for the general public to remember. 2. Keyword Use in Title TagWhat is the title tag? on your webpage is the title of the page that shows up in the top of your browser. See where the red arrow is pointing?
According to a panel of SEO experts assembled by SEOmoz a keyword rich title tag is the most important factor in search ranking factors. The panel agreed that keyword use in the title tag is of exceptional importance. What kind of things do you want your title tag to have in it and what should you avoid? Your title tag should have your farm area(s) and a term related to real estate like “home,” condo,” or “real estate.” You should avoid your name, your company name, some cutesy blog title and even your domain name (unless it too is keyword rich). Why? Simple, you only have so much space available and you need to load whatever space you have with those keywords… don’t waste a single character on a word you don’t need. Keyword Use in Post Titles and Search Engine Friendly URLsIf you use search engine friendly urls and permalinks (urls that include keywords or article titles), you need to consider titling your posts with as many keywords as possible. Search engines heavily weight the url of a page into their ranking factors, so a keyword rich post title that translates into a keyword rich url will be of more value in the search results than one with a cutesy or metaphorical title. Internal Link RelevanceInternal links on your blog are links from any page within the blog to any other page also within the blog. From a user standpoint, internal links help keep visitors on your site by suggesting other relevant pages within the site. You stand a better chance of converting a first time visitor to a regular reader if they read more than one article on your site in a single visit, so internal links are very helpful to users. However, internal links are also valued by search engines like Google. According to SEOmoz’ Search Ranking Factors Thesis, link popularity within a site’s internal link structure is of exceptional importance to search engine’s algorithms. Tip: Use Most Viewed, Related Posts and/or Most Recent Post Widgets to automatically generate relevant internal links on your real estate blog. Keyword Relevancy to ContentKeywords, those pesky little terms that visitors use to search you out in Google by, are critical to your real estate blog. But, the key to selecting quality keywords is not just to include those terms in your meta tags you’d like to be searched by, but to also include those terms in the body of your real estate blog posts as well. According to SEO experts over at SEOmoz, Keyword Relevance to Body Text (the topical relevance of text on the page compared to targeted keywords) is highly important to search engines. They consider that factor greatly when trying to determine how well your real estate blog will show in their indexes for common search terms included in your meta tags. Comment from: Andrew [Visitor] If they remove 'Home Page' from title tag and replaced with a keyword or two they might be able to reach 3rd postion. Meta description could be better as well. Comment from: kermit johnson [Visitor] Does anyone know if Google can see the stuff on Wordpress text widgets? If I use them extensively, and they show up on the sidebar with every page, will google think it is seeing duplicate content?
Thank you. Comment from: McClellanville Real Estate [Visitor] Great Information as Always. Going back to #1, I have purchased several keyword rich URL's that I currently just have pointing toward various pages of my blog. They work great for advertising and telling people where to find something specific without giving them a long URL or complicated directions on where to click, but I don't think I am getting any SEO value from these according to what you said. Is there something more I can be doing with these URL's (right now I'm not paying any hosting on them)? I have noticed that some realtors use your tips here on the 5 top optimization methods to an extreme. So extreme in fact that the blogs look like those weird spam emails one gets from somewhere's from Africa or Italy about one's so-called $6M inheritance from someone one's never heard of before . . . okay, whew! Or how about those blogs that are nearly nothing but backlinks that get re-entered onto blogs everywhere monthly? Why is it that Google does not pickup on these blogs and eliminates or even bans them from their Internet searches? Comment from: Guest [Visitor] Andrew, there is a very solid SEO reason for including HOME PAGE on the home page title tag. So, no, we won't remove it and if we were to remove it, it would not affect the overall positioning. Comment from: Ann Cummings [Visitor] Hi Mary - we took so many notes from our conversations, and we've been working hard on implementing them and making all your tips work for us. We can't thank you enough for all you and John shared with us - your tips certainly do make a difference, that's for sure!! Thank you for including us in this article! Comment from: Bear Perkins [Visitor] Mary - First, let me say what a wonderful opportunity it was to visit with you, John, and Zack (and the future Joshua) for the weekend and "sit at the knees of the Pope" as Ann put's it! Thank you so much for your hospitality, time, and help! And thank you mentioning us in your post! Ann and I do not pretend to be experts in anything (except real estate), but we do take pride in being good students. We have benn working diligently to absorb and put to use the information you provided us over that weekend, and as you mentioned above, it seems to be working! Thank You!
Comment from: Guest [Visitor] Anonymous, Too much of anything can be a bad thing, so I will agree with you there. However, I don't see too many Realtors over using the above tips. Google considers the above suggestions white hat SEO. additionally, these tips focus only on on-page solutions not off page strategies like backlinks. In order to get banned for on-page content (the most common reason is link farming or over using reciprocal links on a blogroll) a Realtor would really have to be quite extreme. I think most Realtors have the common sense to focus on quality content tailored for the reader mixed with solid SEO strategies that when combined do not come off as spammy or violate any of Google's policies. Ann and Bear, We loved having you and are so glad to see you implementing many of the suggestions we made over that weekend. Your efforts have paid off in spades. Now, it is just a matter of watching your traffic and leads climb! Comment from: REI Pipeline [Visitor] Great content! Does the 'more' tag hurt your overall google rankings? Comment from: john [Visitor] seo for blog and get rank for 30 days .. hmm it is possible if that keyword is not that popular .. or 4 word keyword .. but if a lot of SEO masters will be targeting that keyword im sure it will hard . but this 5 tips are the most popular seo tips of any kind of blog .. it will really help ..
Comment from: Chris Dowell [Visitor] Great post! I have been using these tips for about 2 months and have noticed that they work. Comment from: Pensacola Real Estate News [Visitor] Thank you so much for another great post. I am doing pretty well in all categories, but maybe need to work a little harder on the internal linking. Comment from: jf.sellsius [Visitor] Great tips, as usual. RE:3 If your blog's permalink structure does not include the post title, you may have to change it. In Wordpress go to Options>Permalinks. Change the default to "Custom" and insert: /%category%/%postname%/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/ Comment from: Inmoblog [Visitor] Probably the 5 most important tips. I'd add "Internal Link Relevance" Comment from: Guest [Visitor] Inmo, Internal Link Relevance is #4 in this post.
