Ultimate guide to building backlinks

You have to have a good solid strategy for building links from other sites back to yours or else you can pretty much kiss climbing the SERPs

Back links (links from another website back to yours) are still currently the backbone, holy grail and Grand Poo-bah of increasing Page Rank, Search Engine Results Positioning (SERP) and traffic. You have to have a good solid strategy for building links from other sites back to yours or else you can pretty much kiss climbing the SERPs 'bye bye.'  Here are a few of the strategies in an SEO expert's  toolbox for building quality backlinks:

As always, Im going to give a big old shout out to the experts and direct you to some excellent resources before I get too deeply into this article. 131 Legitimate Link Building Strategies, is probably the utmost authority on back link strategies and provides a detailed document on exactly how to do it the right way. And of course, for those of you that dont already check this site out daily, here is a great back link article at SEO Book "101 Ways to Build Link Popularity in 2006" .

Building a quality backlink campaign over 5-6 months:

Remember that growing backlinks naturally is the key.  If you build them too fast, you get penalized so a natural growth of backlinks should take about 5-6 months.  After a 5-6 month campaign a you shouldn't have to focus that heavily on it- since they should be growing on their own. Your campaign should be a multi-pronged approach that includes at least one PRWeb press release, directory submissions (at least 300 with PR 6 or above- grown slowly over -5-6 months), link bait tools (permanent homepage mashup (web app)/lead capture tool), posts comments on related blogs regularly and an automated ping service that will notify social engines and Google when content is updated for increased crawls.  The combination of those tools over a 5-6 month campaign should result in a healthy backlink number of at least 1000 new quality backlinks.  You want to grow backlinks conservatively but consistently to get the most out of their SEO value.  RSS Pieces has the ability to spike our backlinks into the thousands very fast, but we dont.  Why?  Because Google, specifically, would penalize us.

Now, into the breech again, old chaps - here are my 12 favorite strategies to build backlinks and how a real estate or mortgage site could leverage them into quality backlinks and traffic.

I have recently dropped in my goggle rankings, going from 10-15 to rankings of 100-200 for my major keywords. I beleive it is a result of receiving inlinks to quickly. My site is about 5 months old, and I recently started blogging and commenting on other blogs. As a result a few of the larger blog sites that I have been commenting on other blogs are automatically linking to my website for every new blog. I have increased from about 400 inlinks to about 1,200 inlinks in one month from two of these sites that continue to link to my site. My google rankings recently have dropped, do you think these two sites might be the result of my falling in ranks? Would you by chance have any ideas or advice? Thanks.

Great article and useful tips ! Thanks !

In my opinion it's a pitty that Google put the backlinks process on such a high reference. It forces webmaster to go in a daily search of backlinks instead of concentrating on content. Why Google doesn't equally share the backlinks process with the frequency of pages update ?

I mean a guy that creates a quick directory in any field and starts to send mails to all the sites he's listed asking for reciprocal links might soon have a pretty high PR. The other guy working on content will add more and more pages to his site but Google won't boost his website as it should...unless he hires a guy to only work on SEO...

I guess this is available in any other fields as marketing is today predominant. So a long debate can start with the early users of  the early 90's.What is remaining of the original internet dream ?

Could be an idea for another article : - )

One way I found to quickly increase pagerank is to get your articles posted on Netscape.

Netscape has PR6+ If your story is bannered, you get a PR6 backlink!

Lots of great information here.  Thanks for the post. My site ranks well initially due to reciprocal linking with other Realtors. However, I was recently penalized for 60 days by Google for excessive linking and state pages.

I am building a new Sarasota real estate website and have to build links the proper way. I am no longer trading links with other Realtors unless I think they are useful to my visitors.

Yes I had to learn the hard way about these free link exchanges! New WEBMASTERS BEWARE!  These SO CALLED FREE SERVICES ARE NO MORE THAN SPAM OR JUST JUNK LINKS ! Dont waste your time trust me I went from being at the TOP of my keyword (ORGANICALLY I MIGHT ADD) search to the 4 page overnight and low and behold I checked my links and I must have had 35 Casinos linking to my Addiction Based website www.thetotalbargain.com. So beware be smart and dont get dropped like I did for not being sassy enought to know that these link exchanges are Spam Farms.

Great approach that is sound in advice.  Most people just don't want to take the time to build quality backlinks.  It definitely is hard for a reason, because it is the MOST valuable right now according to the search engines. Great post!

Thank you. Your post is true as well because the search engine are ranking backlinks highly nowadays. I just started making my own sites recently but this lesson about backling Spam Farms was learned quickly before things got to out of hand. Once again if you are a new Webmaster stay away from placese like Telelinks Automatic Link Service, BacklinkSpider (really sucks! TERRIBLE BEWARE) MegaLinks Autolinks and many more.

Well I thought I would update the readers of these post to Warn them once again about these Autolink services that claim to be Free. At first glance they are free to join that is true, however the devestation done to my website and rankings due to these hideous services (BACKLINKSPIDER,TELELINKS,MEGALINKS). I have ultimately had to close down my site thetotalbargain.com as these links multiplied like roaches! I  cannot stress the importance of taking your time and doing it the right way.... Organically. I will have a new site today and post back as this is an interesting thread and people seem to want to know how these backlink Freebie farms work. In short if a company claims to offer you free backlinks dont sign up you will Regret It. Good Luck and Patience is a virtue when it comes to a good link.

Great list of tips. I'm definitely going to start actively participating in Yahoo Answers and Google Groups. What do you think about publishing articles in those various Article Banks, like Ezines? What about press releases to get backlinks? Do you think there's more value in publishing an article in a blog or through the article banks?

How can I get my content to hit the index more quickly, currently it can take 2 weeks.

When you refer to "at least one PR Web release" what package do you refer to?  PR Web release has a variety of $$$ packages...is the basic good enough to achieve this or do you need to do at least one of the premier releases?

I have not personally used PR Web release, but I am very intrigued by it...just not sure the best way to implement it into my marketing campaign.
