What seperates a blog from a website?

There are four primary things a blog does inherently that a website simply won't

blogging.jpgI often get asked, what are the differences between a blog and website.  There are four primary things a blog does inherently that a website simply won't. These features allow a blog to market itself to search engines, spread your content across the web to attract new readers, provide an easy way for you to add new content regularly and most importantly, offer a way for readers to interact on the site.

Ping services: auto markets the content to serach engines

Ping services notify search engines and social networks to crawl the blog as soon as you post new content. Conversely, a website remains passive and waits for Google to crawl it when it has the time.  Think of a website as your average couch potato just sitting there waiting for Google to drop by and index it.  Now think of a blog as your friendly neighborhood action hero- scaling buildings in a single bound, sending out a signal to Google and drawing serach engines into its secret lair each time you add new content.

RSS technology: spreads your content across the web to draw in new readers and retain regular readers

RSS automatically delivers each new post you write to your subscribers email program or RSS reader. This technology can be used to deliver email updates of new homes that match a user’s search criteria along with your regular editorial content.

Frequently updated content; keeps your site fresh and interesting to both search engines and readers

Because blogs have a back end CMS, you can easily add new menu items, content and images without knowing a lick of HTML, so you can update your blog more frequently than you would your website.

Commenting system: allows readers to interact with each other and the author

A blog’s commenting system allows readers to submit public comments on each post. So, your blog can actually build a social community of people who come to your site to read what you have to say and converse with one another.

Thanks, Mary!
A much needed comparison. I did not know what a blog was and now I write one, ha!

Thanks for this post. Helpful hints on more things I need to learn.

I just started a blog less than 2 months ago and am liking the format more all the time. Not only is it more interactive, I think it services my clients needs better than a static website.
